Biblical Fiction
Terralor’s new well was supposed to prove that its water could belong to everyone. Instead, it runs bitter with brine—and the evidence points east.
Six weeks after the oath-stone cracked and released its brief gift of Lifewater, Zephira Nalor is helping Terralor build something lasting from the miracle. But when the city’s communal shaft strikes poisoned water, a strip of blue cloth is discovered in the sump. Seven knots mark its edge. The fifth has been deliberately severed.
The cloth and the unfamiliar canyon salt lead Zephira and a small fellowship toward the Eastern Outpost, where seven ancient route pillars cast only six shadows. The households there have little reason to trust visitors from Terralor—especially after receiving a forged demand bearing Terralor’s own reform seal and claiming half their dwindling water supply.
Beneath the cracked pillars, Zephira and her allies uncover traces of an older covenant known as the Equal Measure: a forgotten system designed to keep Terralor and the eastern settlements from placing the whole water supply into one hand. Someone erased its keeper from the records, altered the routes, and buried the truth beneath generations of lawful-looking lies.
Now Route Magistrate Neris Vale promises safety through centralized control, while Asherath Ulon’s hidden network moves behind seals, payments, and offers of desperately needed relief. To expose them, Zephira must confront a difficult truth of her own: she cannot defeat a system built on control while insisting on carrying every burden and making every decision herself.
Can Zephira trust others with part of the measure before fear, thirst, and deception divide both communities—or will the promise of Lifewater become another weapon in the hands of the powerful?
Beneath the Cracked Pillars is Book Two in the Shadows of the Prophecy series, a faith-filled biblical fiction adventure about truth, justice, mercy, and the courage to place God’s gifts into open hands. Best enjoyed after The Sash-Maker’s Secret.
